An update on various smaller things I've finished recently. Some miscellaneous little things, which don't account for much on their own, but all together make for a nice post, I would think. :)

First up, I needed a cabinet to give the turntable a nice spot in the roombox.
 

I started with the small window and cut all the strips from my trusty thick cardstock. First I glued them on with tacky glue on thin clear plastic, but this didnt work. The tacky wouldnt hold on the smooth plastic. I later redid it with contact glue.
I wasn't completely happy with the result, so for the large window I cut squares from a single piece of cardstock, and glued it to the clear plastic as a whole. It took a while, but with better results.

For some extra industrial feel, I wanted some steel beams on the ceiling, like you see in a lot of modern industrial interiors nowadays. So I made some from black foamboard, which I gave a sort of rusty steelwool finish with a sharpie and a paper towel.

As I've said in my previous post, my boyfriend and I live in a tiny student apartment in a shipping container. Because of this, my miniature hobby usually takes up all of our dining table, and sometimes also the desk. He never complains, and I wanted to do something sweet, miniature style.

I decided to duplicate his beloved turntable in one inch scale. Of course a bit selfish, as the only thing to really benefit from this venture is the interior of my roombox.

But he still really likes it! At the end of this post you'll find a picture of the original turntable, so you can compare. :)

I took way too many pictures, so below you'll find how I made this tiny turntable.

I covered the bottom with a sort of black plastic sheet, which has a nice sheen to it.
I then used some scraps of the veneer which I used for the floor, as you can see in the previous post, to cover the sides and top. With a normal mechanical pencil I drew on the Thorens logo.

Bit of a leap in chronology, but here you can see I added a spinning mat, little knobs, and of course the armature for the needle. The armature deviates the most from the original turntable design, but I wanted to give myself a break on that one.
I cut the dustcover from a thin sheet of clear plastic, with the sides carefully molten together.

For my very first post, I'd like to show you the progress I've made on my first room box.

Now, for some clarification, I make all my miniatures on the small kitchen table in the very tiny shipment container (!) where my boyfriend and I live. Yes, really, I live in a shipment container. It's actually rather homey, and as far as student housing goes in Amsterdam, we've been quite fortunate. 

However, that does mean that for everything I make, I must keep in mind that I have limited space and resources available. You might think I chose a strategic hobby with miniatures. :)

That's why for my very first roombox I wanted to keep it simple and lightweight. Simple I couldn't quite handle; of course I had to set way too many goals for myself.

Lightweight I did manage. I made the walls and ceiling from the same piece of foamboard, and left two walls to the imagination. 

I made the floor from a piece of leftover cardboard covered with the actual planks.

Sadly I dont have a lot of photos from this first stage, but here are some:

Now of course I should never have glued them on this piece of ribbed cardboard. If I wouldn't have been so impatient I could have bought a sturdier piece of cardboard, or better yet a sheet of thin wood. The problem I now face is that even after a month of treating it with several stacks of heavy books, and even bending it carefully with my hands, it still curves upward.

And this is when I put it all together. Please disregard the clutter in the background, tiny house you see ;) You can see the curve of the floor; it's not as bad as this anymore, thankfully. For the big windows I envisioned those large spiled industrial windows. Those are still in the making.
