The first steps

For my very first post, I'd like to show you the progress I've made on my first room box.
Now, for some clarification, I make all my miniatures on the small kitchen table in the very tiny shipment container (!) where my boyfriend and I live. Yes, really, I live in a shipment container. It's actually rather homey, and as far as student housing goes in Amsterdam, we've been quite fortunate.
However, that does mean that for everything I make, I must keep in mind that I have limited space and resources available. You might think I chose a strategic hobby with miniatures. :)

That's why for my very first roombox I wanted to keep it simple and lightweight. Simple I couldn't quite handle; of course I had to set way too many goals for myself.

Lightweight I did manage. I made the walls and ceiling from the same piece of foamboard, and left two walls to the imagination.
I made the floor from a piece of leftover cardboard covered with the actual planks.

Sadly I dont have a lot of photos from this first stage, but here are some:

I cut the strips from some thin scrap veneer, so I couldn't tell you which kind of wood it is.
Now of course I should never have glued them on this piece of ribbed cardboard. If I wouldn't have been so impatient I could have bought a sturdier piece of cardboard, or better yet a sheet of thin wood. The problem I now face is that even after a month of treating it with several stacks of heavy books, and even bending it carefully with my hands, it still curves upward.

I poked in some nail holes with a mechanical pencil, and the graphite that stays behind makes it sheen perfectly in the light, like there are tiny nails in there.

For the wall I decided I wanted the biggest wall to be covered in white painted bricks. I decided to follow the advice of the amazing Otterine (www.otterine.com) and instructed my boyfriend to keep every carton of eggs. We had eggs with every breakfast for two weeks.

And this is when I put it all together. Please disregard the clutter in the background, tiny house you see ;) You can see the curve of the floor; it's not as bad as this anymore, thankfully. For the big windows I envisioned those large spiled industrial windows. Those are still in the making.

That's all for now, I hope you enjoyed my ramblings on the creation of this little project. More soon!

  2. The floor looks great. I have to make a floor for a room box soon and I decided against cardboard and bought some thin ply wood. Fingers crossed it doesn't warp!

    1. Thanks so much! I think I'll have to redo the floor in the distant future. The warping is still quite bad. I hope you have better luck.

  3. I love the white brick walls. I have been wanting to do that for quite some time. Yours look great. Did you grout it and then paint it all white?

    1. Thank you! I actually did not grout at all, I just glued all the little bricks on the foamboard directly (one by one) and painted it all white. I found it already looked realistic enough without grout.
